Schools are responsible to keep parents informed about the school, how it
functions, school related events and the ways parents can participate.
When schools create a
positive school climate by reaching out to families and providing structures
for them, parents and families feel that they are welcome.
How does your child’s school make parents feel
welcome?
- Does the school offer
some kind of orientation program for families when they first enrolled
their children?
- When parents contact
the school either on the phone or in person,
are they always greeted in a friendly way?
- When visiting the
school, do parents feel as though they are
part of the school? Do parents
feel comfortable?
- Are parents able to
find information about the school?
- Does the school
encourage teachers', students', and parents' to contribute
suggestions and ideas, and are these ideas
implemented when possible?
- Are parents encouraged to
visit their children’s school and classroom any time?
- Does the school offer
parenting workshops to enhance parenting skills, knowledge and
understanding of the education, and
developmental needs and activities of their children?
- Does the school provide
resources for helping children at home?

written information to parents about school rules, parent-teacher
