History of Missing Children's Day

On May 25, 1979, six-year-old Etan Patz disappeared while walking one block to catch his bus to school. In commemoration of all missing children, the anniversary of Etan's disappearance is recognized internationally as Missing Children's Day.

May 25th was first designated as Missing Children's Day by U.S. Presidential Proclamation in 1983. Then, in 1986, Canadian Solicitor-General Perrin Beatty declared May 25 as National Missing Children's Day in Canada.
