RAISING LIFELONG READERS
Today parents are aware of the importance of reading for their children. Kids who like and enjoy reading develop thinking skills. They wonder and want to read and learn more. As they read more often, they become better readers.
Here are a few tips for parents on how to lead kids to books and reading.
1. Visiting the library regularly with your children is fun. Have them learn to use the library as a lifetime skill. Get a library card for your kids.
2. Go to bookstores to browse and even buy books. Have your child
join you in browsing for books and making selections.
3. Chose books at their reading level. Be aware of their reading interest.
4. Read to your children every day for 15-20 minutes. The researches
show, that reading every day with your kids increases a child's reading ability. Kids love bedtime stories. Sharing a book with your child every night before going to sleep is a great way to develop an interest in reading.
5. Talk about the book you read with your children. Encourage them to make comments, and ask questions while you are reading.
6. It is also equally important to have them read to you. Tell your child how proud you are of his/her new skills and efforts. Reading to parents helps children develop a positive attitude toward reading.
7. Encourage your child to join any reading programs at your public library.
8. Encourage your kids to create their own reading club with their friends. Kids like to invite friends over and visit friends. Having a book club day will encourage them to read together and exchange books. Have them keep track of the books club members read.
